Canyonlands National Park, Utah
While planning our spring trip I had debated whether or not to visit Canyonlands National Park. It was the least dog friendly out of all of the 5 national parks in Utah… but it would have been the only park of the Mighty 5 that I would not have visited. Knowing myself, and we’re going on 35 years now, I knew it would bother me not ticking all 5 national parks off my list. Especially considering I would be about 10 minutes away from the state park we were visiting, Dead Horse State Park.
Grand View Point Canyonlands National Park, Utah
So I decided to visit Canyonlands and rearranged my itinerary about a week before I left for our trip to Utah. And although I am glad that I did, I know that I did not get to take in this park as well as I could have. Partly because I had Boomer with me and partly because a rather impressive thunderstorm rolled in during our visit.
I took the Island In The Sky auto tour. This allowed Boomer to join me, even if he was required to stay in the car per the National Park website.

But he looks pretty good in the car right? I mean look at that face. It makes you want to give him kisses all over his face, doesn’t it?
Just me?
The day was cool and with the impeding thunderstorm rolling in so I was able to leave Boomer in the car with little fear of coming back to a melted dog. Although most of the photography spots were near the road so I did not leave him for long. Which was good because Boomer has this annoying habit of screeching loudly when left alone in the car.
Canyonlands National Park, Utah
I did step away from Boomer at the Grand View Point Overlook and took a quick, yet easy hike along the rim, overlooking the Colorado River Canyon. It reminded me a little of Bryce Canyon minus the color and a little bit of the Grand Canyon minus the depth.
Grandview Point Canyonlands
The Island In The Sky Drive is approximately 12 miles one way, dead ending at Grand View Point. A trail out to Grand View Point can be followed along the canyon’s edge for 2 miles (3.2km). The views from the trail are spectacular and changed drastically with the changing weather. Dogs are not allowed on the trail.
Canyonlands National Park is located about 40 minutes from Moab Utah heading north on Highway 191 and turning west on Highway 313.
