Dogs are among the most loving and loyal companions you can ever have. Once you show them that you care, they will surely spend the rest of their lives with you.

If you want to be a good dog parent to your canine pal, you have to do everything to exchange their loyalty with care and love. However, as much as you want to give it your best shot in filling those parenting shoes, there are some things you can possibly do that won’t be appreciated by your dogs, or others.

To keep the loyalty of your dogs, here are some of the things you should avoid doing to your dog:

Letting Him Live Outside 

It is fine to let loose your dog in your yard for some play time, but chaining him up outside year round isn’t really a great idea. Dogs need human interaction. Without it, they feel neglected and it may result in depression. Also, keeping them outside will only expose them to various risks.

Leaving Him Alone in the Car

Leaving a dog unattended inside the car can lead to serious consequences. Every year, a lot of dogs die from heat fatigue due to being left in the car. During the warm seasons, temperatures in the car may rise to about 120 degrees Fahrenheit in just 10 minutes. As the car heats up, your dog can get seriously ill, or worse, die from heatstroke.   

Additionally, when your dog is with you while driving, he should have the proper belt or carrier. A loose dog can cause distraction and may interfere with your use of the accelerator pedal or brakes. And just like a person not wearing a seat belt, a dog can also acquire serious injuries in the event of an accident.

Also, it is advised that you keep an eye on your dog when traveling. Do not let him stick his head out of the window.

Being Too Affectionate to Others

It is always best to set boundaries and limitations in everything you do. Same goes for pet dogs. If you let him become too affectionate with other people, you should not wonder why he did not bark at the stranger who trespassed on to your property. You also can’t expect him to come to you when you call for him while playing with another dog.

Furthermore, when your dog licks and jumps on other people, you need to apologize for his behavior. Otherwise, your dog will assume he did fine, when actually he did not. When your dog gets used to that behavior, people may end up getting hurt.

Hitting Your Dog

There are instances when your dog misbehaves, but never ever hit him. Hitting your dog will only strain your relationship. It will not just create fear, but it will also weaken his trust and confidence in you. As a result, your dog may become insecure and/or aggressive at some point.

Feeding Him with Inappropriate Food

Not everything can be eaten by your dog. There are certain foods that are considered deadly, such as onions, grapes, raisins, chocolates, uncooked dough, raw meat, eggs, rawhides, fruit cores and seeds, gums and sweet, and even alcohol. So, always be careful with the treats you give your dog, and monitor what he eats.

Skipping Veterinary Care

There are some dog owners, who think they know their dogs too well that they act as their own veterinarian. While certain cases are simple enough to be solved by home care, some things are best left to the expertise of a vet.

A regular veterinary check, which includes inspection of the gums and teeth, will help diagnose possible conditions and diseases and provide necessary treatments before they get worse.

Everybody wants what’s best for his canine companion, but even good pet owners can sometimes do things that are not ideal. Thus, make sure to avoid these common mistakes, and be the best dog parent you’ve always wanted to be.
