It is funny when you are friends with someone and you have not seen them in awhile, and then when you do meet up, without even discussing it, they suggest to meet at the same place that you were going to suggest meeting up at before you can say “let’s meet here”.

Most likely it was not a coincidence as we both like beer, so when my friend Amy suggested meeting at Scuttlebutt Restaurant and Pub in Everett Washington, I was delighted with her suggestion. I was traveling from Idaho to Washington for a dog treat show last summer that happened to be near Amy’s home. I would stay with her for the weekend, which was not only great to catch up with my friend, but also helped spread the word about my dog treat business to Western Washington.

I arrived at the Scuttlebutt Restaurant wondering how long I would have to wait before Amy would arrive as she was commuting from Seattle. It was a Friday night and traffic can sometimes be a pain as I had already experienced on the drive up to Everett on the I-5. I had arrived to Scuttlebutt and just as I was pulling off the main road this crazy person behind me started honking and flashing their headlights at me. I looked in my rear-view mirror to see what sort of person would be causing such a commotion, only to recognize the car AND the crazy person driving it. It was Amy.

Sorry Amy to call you out like that, but girl, you’re kinda crazy!

Ocean views from Scuttlebutt Brewing Everett Washington

One benefit of the Scuttlebutt Restaurant and Pub is it’s location, right near the ocean, giving you a nice view. Stepping out of my car I then realized there was also a drawback to it’s location, the smell. I do not mind ocean smell, but fishy smell I do mind, and today it was fishy smell. The smell can of course be avoided by sitting inside the restaurant, which is what we did. Being that it was a Friday night we did briefly wait for a table.

After we were seated we ordered some beers, because both Amy and I like to get right down to business, and that business is of course drinking beer. My first beer was the Hoptopia Imperial IPA. This beer has an 8% alcohol by volume (ABV) and a 75 International Bittering Unit (IBU). The tasting notes list Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Columbus hops. These are hops that I am fans of, specifically the Cascade and Centennial, but unfortunately this beer I was not a huge fan of. I am thinking it has something to do with the heavy malt flavor. I would have been more in to this style of beer back in my Irish Red Beer drinking days, but no so much now. It is a good beer for those who enjoy malty beers over hop forward beers.

My next beer was the Gale Force IPA. This beer has a 5.6 ABV and a 96 IBU. This beer was much more my speed. Light on the malt flavor, lighter in color and according to the tasting notes from the brewery this beer is proof that aggressively hopped beer can be refreshing. This beer is flavored with Columbus, Goldings and Cascade hops. It had the right amount of hoppy flavor and did stand up to it’s promise of refreshing.

We did order food and neither of us were overly thrilled as the prices were slightly high for what you got and the food was nothing to knock your socks off about.  I ordered the fish tacos, which I got two tacos for $9.59 USD. YIKES! Probably the most reasonably price items on their menu are their burgers, ranging from $8 to $9 USD. My recommendation is to go for the beer and maybe not the food.

One thing about this brewery that has always had me wondering was, what’s with the name? Although this brewery has been around since 1996, when I think of Scuttlebutt I have visions of the creature from South Park with the Patrick Duffy leg. There is no relation however. The brewery’s name refers to a term of endearment for the brewer’s wife that was given to her by her father before she was born.   Apparently she was quite the scuttlebutt on her father’s military base before she was born.

The Scuttlebutt Restaurant is located at 1205 Craftsman Way in Everett.
