 Blood Orange Beer Pound Cake

Blood Orange Beer Pound Cake

For about the last month I had been watching old episodes of Dexter. I find it amazing that in the eight years that the show ran their opening credits never changed. Dexter getting ready: smashing the misquote, shaving, slicing up the ham, a crack of an egg, grinding up coffee and then the slice into the blood orange.

Because I am not adventurous I had never had a blood orange until this year. My knowledge about them centered mostly around Dexter’s morning routine where he, with precision sliced into the orange foreshadowing his dark secret. And because it was a show about a serial killer of course it was appropriate to use the blood orange.

Did I mention that I love pound cake? I mean, really who doesn’t? That buttery dense goodness that only a pound of each flour, eggs, butter and sugar could serve up. So what about adding beer to this pound of tastiness and then adding a blood orange? Well that is what the Beeroness did and I decided to give this recipe a go while putting my own spin on it.

Ingredients you will need:
For the cake
2 cups flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ cup sugar
zest from a blood orange
1 cup butter (softened)
2 large eggs
¼ cup blood orange juice
¼ cup wheat beer
1 tablespoon olive oil
½ teaspoon vanilla extract

For the glaze
2 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons blood orange juice
2 tablespoons beer
Now for your directions:

Preheat your oven for 325 degrees

For the cake:
Take the flour, baking powder and salt, mix and set aside.
Mix either by hand or using a stand mixer the sugar and zest from the blood orange. Then add in the butter, mixing until you have a nice soft creamy texture. Beat in the eggs one at a time and then add the orange juice, beer, olive oil and vanilla. Curdling may occur but it will work out, just like most episodes of Dexter evading the police. Lastly add in the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

Next grease a loaf pan and pour the mixture in to the pan and bake for 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Allow to cool before adding the glaze.  You can sit back and watch an episode of Dexter while you wait.

For the glaze:
Mix the powdered sugar, blood orange juice and beer, adding more liquid if a thinner glaze is desired. Pour the glaze over the cake and wait for it to harden before slicing the cake. I did add a few drops of orange extract, to give the glaze a more zesty taste as I felt the glaze was not overly orange in flavor.

Because I was taking this pound cake to a party I cut up the slices into small pieces and covered them in the glaze. The cake pieces were a hit!

And now if you will excuse me I have to get back to Dexter. I am pretty sure his sister, Deb, is going to find out some disturbing news!
